It gives me great pleasure to hear of your exemplary action while on guard duty the evening of (Sat) 12 October 1968. You were faced with a potentially dangerous situation and acted immediately and in the proper manner to apprehend one of the individuals involved in the disturbance.

Jim enters the army in Detroit, Michigan Wed 4 Sep 1968 in Detroit, Michigan. He will train for the next few weeks at Fort Knox, Kentucky.

Wed 4 Sep 1968 James A. Fortune enters the army in Detroit, Michigan. He is sent to Fort Knox, Kentucky for basic training. As you can see from the triangle at the base of the troop photograph he is in the 5th Training Brigade, C Company, 19th Battalion & 2nd Platoon.

Not longer after Jim finish basic training something happens Sat 12 Oct 1968. I am not sure what happened on that particular Saturday evening, but Jim was on guard duty. The letter from Headquarters states,
